Use of Exotic Spice during Hormone Treatment Reduces the Risk of Breast Cancer

It is been found through a recent a research conducted researchers at the University of Missouri that “Curcumin, a popular Indian spice, blocks breast cancer cell growth in women on hormone replacement therapy

Most of the women who use hormone replacement therapy to treat the symptoms of menopause usually get in risk of rising of breast cancer but now it’s possible to have hormone treatment without risk.
Researchers hypothesized that by blocking the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a molecule that helps supply blood to tumors, curcumin could potentially reduce the proliferation of breast cancer cells.

The research team confirmed their theory in an animal model, finding that curcumin delayed the first appearance, decreased incidence and reduced multiplicity of progestin-accelerated tumors. Curcumin inhibits progestin-induced VEGF secretion from breast cancer cells, said Salman Hyder, of the Zalk Endowed Professorship in Tumor Angiogenesis and professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Missouri, Columbia.

“Curcumin and other potential anti-angiogenic compounds should be tested further as dietary chemopreventive agents in women already exposed to hormone replacement therapy containing estrogen and progestin in an effort to decreased or delay the risk of breast cancer associated with combined hormone replacement therapy,” Dr Hyder concluded.
